HALLENBECK FELLOWSHIPS

The Hallenbeck Fellowships, in honor of Deacon Ted Hallenbeck*, are offered to deacons who have demonstrated financial need, and are canonically resident in good standing in The Episcopal Church. Fellowships make it possible for these deacons to attend conferences or other educational events whose content is related to the diaconate and/or The Episcopal Church.

Examples include: The Triennial Conference, and The Archdeacon & Deacon Director’s Conference (both from the Association for Episcopal Deacons); General Convention; DOTAC; World Diakonia; Episcopal Preaching Foundation; Episcopal Parish Network, etc.

We will award up to four fellowships per year, each providing reimbursement for conference costs, travel, and room & board up to $1,500 per person.

Applications are due April 15 and September 15, and must be submitted before the desired conference.

Ted Hallenbeck

*The Hallenbeck Fellowships honor Deacon Ted Hallenbeck’s wide-ranging ministry and vision for the diaconate, by encouraging learning and networking within our diaconal community. Currently, Ted is enjoying retirement in the Diocese of Rhode Island. The Rev. Edwin T. Hallenbeck (Ted), was ordained as a deacon in the Diocese of Rhode Island in 1985.  After a secular career as a university administrator and a fundraising and organizational consultant, Ted turned his talents and energies to a variety of ministries.  In addition to teaching in the diocesan School for Ministry and serving on several diocesan committees, he was also active in the South Providence Neighborhood Ministries, serving as its president for a time.   Ted became active in the North American Association for the Diaconate (now the Association for Episcopal Deacons) early on, serving first on the board, and then as president from 1991 to 1993.  Following that, he became NAAD’s first executive director, serving for more than ten years, and leading them to expand their work and visibility in many areas, such as the national church and the ecumenical diaconal community.  As a representative of NAAD, Ted was active in DOTAC (Diakonia of the Americas and Caribbean), serving as its treasurer for several years.   Ted was also one of the first men to join the board of the renamed Fund for the Diaconate of The Episcopal Church, in 1990.  In 2011, he became the first deacon to be president of the Fund, continuing in that role for four years, and presiding over the Fund’s first strategic plan, which led to the expansion of the Fund’s grants program.
