The Association for Episcopal Deacons

The Association for Episcopal Deacons is a member-funded, non profit organization. They provide diaconal resources, materials and connections at no cost, in thanks to generous contributions from individual & diocesan members. AED exists to enable the diakonia (diaconal service and action) of all the baptized. To this end, it encourages every diocese to develop programs to ordain deacons, and provides resources to recruit and select, form, deploy, supervise and support deacons.

AED's ongoing work includes:
  • Maintaining the position as the “go-to” source for information on deacon formation and supervision. Their March 2020 A3D Conference addressed the complex issues of Latinx diaconal formation, and offered insights for those planning formation for any candidate whose first language is not English. These conferences are open to all with an interest in deacon formation and supervision.
  • Convening a wonderful gathering of deacons at a Triennial Conference. Open to all, the 2019 conference featured Presiding Bishop Michael Curry as keynote speaker and a variety of dynamic deacon-led workshops.
  • Developing a robust website filled with resources for dioceses, deacons, and others interested in partnering with us.
  • Bringing the deacons’ prophetic voice to the councils of the church. Since 2018, more and more deacons have been appointed to General Convention task forces and other church-wide groups.
  • Working with the Church Pension Group and the Fund for the Diaconate to address issues of critical financial interest to deacons.
Membership in AED is open to individuals and dioceses (lay or ordained, of any denomination).
